17-year old OFW gang-raped in Kuwait

I read it in the news. Thought I’d blog about it before life takes over.

She is seventeen. She was fleeing from her employer so she took a cab. The cab driver raped her. Then he brought her to an apartment where a group of Bangladeshis raped her. It was a miracle that she still had the strength to escape by jumping through the window. Suffering several injuries, onlookers brought her to a hospital and that was how the Philippine Embassy came to know about her plight.

Seventeen. Why was she even in Kuwait? The poor child is a victim thrice over. First by an illegal recruiter (how else could her papers have been processed?); second, by an abusive employer (why else would she flee?); and third, by a bunch of beasts who don’t see her as a child, a sister or a daughter.

If our own government fails to follow up on this case; if justice eludes her and even the recruiter who sent her abroad goes unpunished — then she becomes a victim for the fourth time.

I don’t know this child. I just read about her story in the news. I do know that hers is not an isolated case because Kuwait has among the highest number of runaway maids in the Middle East. Now, shouldn’t we call the attention of the Kuwaiti Ambassador about her case? Paging the DFA.
